DAVID BOHMS 'S HOLOKINESIS: the BLOCK UNIVERSE 2.0?

Einstein’s 4D Block Universe

Einstein’s Special and General Relativity leads directly to the Block Universe model (also known as Eternalism), which states that the past, present, and future all exist simultaneously within a four-dimensional spacetime continuum.

In standard relativistic physics, space and time are fused into a single four-dimensional manifold ($x, y, z, t$).

Just as a location in space doesn't vanish simply because you walk away from it, points in time do not cease to exist when they slide into the "past. The Big Bang, the extinction of the dinosaurs, "your" birth, this exact moment, and the far future all exist permanently as fixed geometric coordinates inside a static 4D "loaf" of spacetime.

Bohm’s Holokinesis: Dynamic Enfoldment

David Bohm’s theory of Holokinesis is fully compatible with the Block Universe atemporal view of reality, but it interprets how this simultaneity exists in a more dynamic way.

In Bohm’s framework, the Universe does not sit passively spread out across a temporal grid. Instead, the entire Universe - past, present, and potential future - is enfolded within the unitary undivided whole at every moment and contains everything in an eternal now.

Bohm agrees that temporal succession is an explicate illusion, but he rejects the idea that fundamental reality is merely a frozen, static 4D block. In the Holomovement (Holokinesis), simultaneity functions differently:

  • Enfolded Simultaneity: The past, present, and future exist simultaneously because they are enfolded within the Implicate Order—much like multiple overlapping interference patterns encoded on a single holographic plate.

  • Continuous Projection: What we experience as the "passage of time" is the Holomovement continuously unfolding information out of the timeless implicate matrix into explicit localized form, and then enfolding it back in.

  • The Past as Active Memory: In Bohm's view, the past is not a point sitting behind us on a timeline; it is an active, enfolded trace in the Implicate Order, which is always present. The future exists as an enfolded set of structural potentials waiting to project.
