THE HOLOMOVEMENT

Separate human bodies do not possess independent, autonomous motion through "space". What people usually perceive (in the Fragmentary Perception of thought) as an individual person walking through space is only a projection of thought. What happens in reality is the unitary Wholeness in constant motion, unfolding and enfolding itself.

1. Motion as the Expression of the Whole

In classical physics, isolated objects exist independently and push against each other in space. Physicist David Bohm inverted this picture entirely: movement is primary, and "things" are secondary abstractions.

• The Illusion of Local Motion: At the fundamental level of the Implicate Order, all "things" enfold back into the total fabric of reality. At the next instant, the total fabric unfolds (re-creates) an updated expression of every "thing".

• The True Actor: What moves "from here to there" is not an isolated piece of matter, but the entire unbroken flow of reality - what Bohm called "Undivided Wholeness in Flowing Movement".

2. Free Will and "What Is"

If reality is an undivided, unbroken unitary movement, the classical concept of individual free will - an autonomous ego sitting inside a brain making independent choices - is a psychological illusion.

Bohm argued that this illusion is generated by thought:

1. The Division of Self: Thought creates an imaginary boundary, declaring "I am inside this skin, and the universe is outside" (the Horizontal Conflict).

2. The Illusion of Control: Thought then imagines that this internal "I" is an independent supervisor directing action, choosing between future possibilities.

3. The Reality of "what Is": In truth, the thought that says "I choose" is itself just another enfolded wave arising spontaneously out of the Implicate Order. There is no separate thinker behind the thought, and no separate actor behind the action.

When Bohm (and his close dialogical partner Jiddu Krishnamurti) spoke of "what is," they meant the unitary (undivided), dynamic state of reality in the present moment. Striving to goals and wanting for reality to be different than "what is" creates the imaginary Horizontal Conflict. Recognizing that "all that can be is what is" dissolves the illusion that a separate "me" could have chosen otherwise.

3. Does This Mean Reality Is Rigid Determinism?

Saying individual free will is an illusion does not mean Bohm’s Universe is a cold, mechanistic clockwork machine. The Universe is a constant dynamic transformation of energy that is always new unitary Wholeness.

• Mechanical Determinism vs. Creative Unfoldment: Classical clockwork determinism assumes separate billiard balls striking each other. Bohm rejected this description because the "objects" that thought and classical physics see as separate parts are not really separate at all.
